Things I've Made

A Bedtime Contract - A Silly Writing Exercise

I wish to do good work.

I define good work as a strong day in the office, productive workshop time or being present completing life admin tasks. I wish to do more of it and one of the barriers I'm facing is sleep.

Like many of my peers, I am struggling to get to bed at a reasonable hour. Although I have kicked social media and TV, but just chatting to roommates is frequently keeping me up late. That lack of sleep makes all facets of my life more difficult. Establishing a routine bedtime will be of benefit for the rest of my life and will be critical to doing good work.

To help support my absolute lack of will power, I took a recommendation from Atomic Habits and designed a bedtime contract. A document that I and The Supervisor sign (my roommate) that dictates a punishment of a shot of vinegar for an infraction. It took a couple of revisions, but I'm extremely pleased with my work.

Is it helping? Well, it is a little. Is it funny? I think so.

Spending so much time thinking about why I should go to bed on time has given me a kick, but meaningfully adhering to punishment has been difficult. It has been helpful to take the punishment before bed, as immediate punishment, as opposed to when I've already had a tired and shit day.

This was a really cute writing exercise and I really enjoyed this exploration of creative writing.
